Thylacine

The initial idea came from Andy who admits to cheekily nicking one of his own drum patterns from the Drongos (sorry Tom & Dek).

After many weeks of Jake trying to convince Andy and myself that a wolf with a pouch did actually once exist and that his lyrics were not the rant of a lunatic, Thylacine was born. As the band became more enlightened to its plight and cause of extinction – an almost linear existence played out by the English wolf – the more the Tasmanian Tiger became the central concept to Megafaunal Genocide.

The introductory scream is Jake saying “Extinct” not “Rick Stein” as I so wrongly thought.

The way the bass enters the mid-section was a bit of a quirky idea which we all liked and when the bass tracks were laid down Jake was impressed as to how it locked-in with the guitar in the second part of the mid-section. I was extremely modest at the time and didn’t tell him it was mostly down to luck!

The hammer-ons at the end of the track are pure Jake-genius, it’s a great way to end a live set!

Ancient line,
Primitive design,
Suckles close,
In matriarch pouch.
Rival,
Of new,
Man and,
Canine.

Lost to myth and law,
Cry for the Thylacine.

Ancient,
Pack call,
Rallies,
Old blood.

Lost to myth and Law,
Cry for the Thylacine.

Hunted to Extinction,
Retreat to the isles.
Paraded in zoos,
Sign of decline.
Knowledge we can’t trace,
Paths we cannot cross.

Knowledge we can’t trace,
Paths we cannot cross.
Tool Weilding hands,
Bathed in blood.

Antipodean Slaughter
