Slab @ The Wagon & Horses, Digbeth, this Thursday!!!

We’re looking forward to playing the Wagon & Horses, Adderley Street, Birmingham on Thursday (17th Feb) alongside the jaw-dropping Oar and skull-smashing Scrage. It’s a free gig, which means more beer!!!

August/September 2011

26th August saw us playing Bimingham’s Flapper with Black Veins, Rise of my Empire and our metal bros The Hundred Handed.

Black Veins blasted the evening off with angst-filled screamaholic depravity. Then Rise of my Empire cruised through a slick set of polished numbers. Next up were The Hundred Handed. This was their first gig, but we’d been listening to their songs develop over time at Hellfire studios and knew we were in for a treat. They rocked the crowd’s tits off!! Towering riffs crashing down with blow after blow of guitar energy and the vocal partnership of Mark and John took us on a magical metal journey.
Future’s so bright…

And then it was us gits! Prior to taking the stage we had already gone through an aborted interview; been as polite as possible to drunken fans; been as polite as possible to bands without gear; been as polite as possible to late bands; found disappearing drummers; been as polite as possible to people who wear shades onstage; and managed to get Jake to draw a face on his belly. And we’d got to follow the amazing set unleashed by The Hundred Handed! All in half-an-hour…
PANTS

I’m trying to desperately convey the only reasonable conclusion I can come to for Jake playing the whole of our set in just his underpants!!?? I’m still having flashbacks now! We played the short, sharp, shock set and it went down a treat in contrast to The Hundred Handed’s monolithic sprawl. An encore of YiZiErShi was vocally enhanced by Mark and another Flapper success came to a close.

Gig raises funds for RSPCA!

The RSPCA charity gig at the Wagon & Horses was a resounding success! We raised £200 for the animal centre on 15th July. A huge thanks to all the bands involved and a big hug for Zoe for her Boozy Brownies and Malibu Cupcakes, which went down a treat! Cheers also to Greg on the sound desk and all the staff at the venue!

Tour of the North comes to an end

The Tour of the North (or aptly re-named It’s Jim Up North) is over and we’re thoroughly knackered, but had a great time! Read the blog here. We played at:

  • 1st July – Burton on Trent – The Appleby
  • 2nd July – Wakefield – The Snooty Fox
  • 3rd July – Ashton Under Lyne – The Station
  • 6th July – Manchester – Kraak
  • 7th July – Carlisle – Club Victoria
  • 8th July – Glasgow – 13th Note Cafe
  • 9th July – Edinburgh – Bannermans

We’ve been invited back to London by the promoter at the Purple Turtle. She’s asked us to play The Archway in Highgate on 17th July; how could we refuse?!

We’ve confirmed the venue for our RSPCA charity gig. It’s at the Wagon & Horses, Digbeth on July 15th. We’ve got Bournemouth math-metallers Macarga on the bill, Brumcore gods, I Hate You More and Doommasters, Shebrew. It’ll be a great night for a worthy cause! It’s £4 in and all door-takings go to the animal centre.

SLAB’s Tour of The North, July 2011. A memoir (ish).

1st July – Burton on Trent – The Appleby

Just about recovered from cider-rum attack, which is at its deadliest when given freely… Support was in the guise of Stonemonkey, who were a guitarist short but still played a great set and Midnight Lychen Party, who were simply stunning with their angst-ridden noise. They throw in a mix of Fugazi, 80s Matchbox, Sonic Youth and a sprinkling of Birthday Party; it’s all truly jaw-dropping. We were pleased with our set, though Kimbo did put the pedal to the metal for AFG. A great gig and memorable drinking sesh! I had the hangover from hell next morning, even the smell of a fry-up was making me gag! We crawled bleary-eyed up to Sheffield to drop Kimbo’s car off at home and then Snake Pass-ed it to Wakefield. Glorious day and stunning views.

Tour poster

2nd July – Wakefield – The Snooty Fox

We effin’ love this venue. Malc, the owner, puts so much heart and soul into the place and Terrorizer magazine seem to have recognised the fact, hence it being publicised as a Grindhouse gig. The turnout was the best we’ve had there and being streamed on the net whilst playing is a great bonus. Shame we couldn’t afford the DVD of the performance this time. All the bands were on fire that night and we rocked it up big time! After our set  Agonyst took the stage and this Norfolk-based four piece were nothing short of stunning… Crazy time signatures, a standard of playing not often seen and a great set. Off stage they were really friendly and full of admiration of Slab’s music. For me the highlight was watching their bass player, Weanie (he’s a big lad!), play his five string. He actually played all five strings – no bullshit posturing – knocking out crazy jazz/metal riffs all the way.

Back to Kimbo’s ranch for a well-earned kip.

3rd July – Ashton-under Lyme – The Station

Last time we played here it was bloody freezing, but immensely enjoyable. This time it was baking hot and doubly immensely enjoyable. Keith from 3CR had organised it all and they were first up on the bill. Described as ‘obnoxious punk bastards’, they are exactly as it says on the tin and are a sight to behold! Leave your morals at the door ‘cos 3CR don’t fuck about telling you how it is – but they do it in hilarious fashion. Boggy, their singer/bassist had me in stitches, singing through such classics as She Bummed Me as waves of beer mats and bags of crisps bounced off his huge frame. 3CR are incredible!

Now here’s the embarrassing bit. I’ve completely forgotten who the second band were… they had a female vocalist and were from County Durham… I think. I will speak to the oracle that is Jake and re-edit this blog asap. Apologies to the band.

Then it was our turn. We bludgeoned the punk crowd with as many songs as possible in our 35 minute slot, making sure that we included Chaos Bastard for Keith. An encore of The Nihilist went down a treat. No young children running around to avoid with my bass guitar this time, just a load of beer mats after Jake mused over the mic that we were feeling left out!! Nice one, Chum!

Headliners were Threats from Edinburgh. Proper old skool punk was blasted our way without sounding at all dated. These guys have been going since ’79 so they know exactly what they’re doing! Really tight set by a class act.

A big, big thanks to Keith again for organising another great gig at The Station!

And so the tour of The North hit a brief hiatus. Kimbo trundled back to Sheffield to try and break the back of his workload for a couple of days, while Jake and myself got the van of war back to Brum, nursing our beer mat wounds and still slightly hungover heads. My two days off flew by via sleep and playing very crappily online on Halo : Reach.

P.S. Thanks to Derbyshire Police for the speeding fine and the lovely photo of the ‘van of war’ on their website. We’ll do anything for free publicity!

6th July – KRAAK – Manchester

In the blink of an eye it was the tour’s second leg. The first leg had comprised of venues we had played before, but now we were moving into unknown territory. The Manchester gig had originally been at The Cavendish, but something had gone wrong at the venue, so a quick switcheroo was made for the KRAAK to hold it. Our good mates, MWP, are always on the ball. The venue is used mainly for art installations, but has music events lined-up for it and rightly so. The sound was truly inspiring and we were feeling on top form after our soundcheck.

Turnout-wise it was slightly disappointing, though the venue doesn’t even have any signage, yet!?! Keith from 3CR had made it down from Ashton and it was great to see Lewis’s sister Debs come along for the ride.

First on were The Fiction. Amazing young band, who knocked-out some killer tunes, that had the polished vibe of Killswitch Engage.

Then in front of the small crowd we blasted out a deafening set. People were really digging the Slabbage before them and we shifted a load of merchandise that night!! Thank you, Manchester! Still can’t get used to signing stuff and I always manage to put a swear word in my name. He! He!

Then MWP took to the stage. Hassan and Paddy – guitar and bass, respectively and drummer Dion, were fronted by new vocalist Michelle and my god they are beyond awesome!! Industrial grooves blasted with thrash attitude and a female singer with a demonic range!

7th July – Club Victoria – Carlisle

After a surprisingly good night’s kip in the van, parked at a service station somewhere between Manchester and Carlisle, we arrived at the venue ridiculously early. Being of creative and logistical minds, we set out for the nearest village; if our calculations were correct then the local pub would be open by the time we got there!

We entered the picturesque village of Wetheral and parked outside The Wheatsheaf, only to find it wasn’t opening for another hour! So some exploring found us next to a river, spanned by a monolithic viaduct which we’d got to via Wetheral Railway Station (The Railway Children, anyone?) and a series of over 90 steps down a wooded embankment.

Now we were effin’ hungry and needed to quaff the nearest pint…

To the Pub!!

Two pints and a burger later we were ready to hit Carlisle, again.

Club Victoria is an anomaly amongst venues. It’s an amazing building, steeped in history, with the venue’s professional stage in the basement (already trodden by GBH and Yellowman) and most importantly, they make pizzas!! Proprietor, Martin, is a real character and made us feel welcome from the off.

June 2011

The 4th June gig at The Flapper in Birmingham was a great evening of metal mayhem. Eradikator started the night off with amazing Slayeresque killer riffage and Andy, their guitarist, celebrated his birthday in style! Then London’s Dead Existence doomed it up with huge monolithic panache. More London metal came from the exemplary Dopefight; giving brutal lessons in how to write immersive stoner rock… Feckin’ Great!! We then took to the stage to a packed Flapper (as it had been all evening), and gave a brutal set: mixing it up with old favourites Yi Zi, Devilwalk and Chaos B*stard alongside a selection from the latest album. All-in-all a very successful night and a great precursor to the following evening at the Purple Turtle in Camden Town. A big brotherly metal hug to Dead Existence, Dopefight and Eradikator for making the gig extremely memorable!

SLAB van reaches Mach3

So, Sunday 5th June saw us battling through the M1 traffic and pouring rain to get to the Absolute Filth all-dayer at the Purple Turtle in Camden Town, London. The place was rammed and being bludgeoned by the mighty Slabdragger as we walked in… great tunes, great name! The day was being organised by Dead Existence’s frontman, Jake, (too many similar names that day!!) and he’d done a cracking job! We’ll be playing there again real soon, as we went down a treat and the promoter has asked us to come back for another weekend gig. Great to catch-up with (our) Jake’s cousin, Jon Hopkins, who’s doing alright for himself… thanks for the beer, chap!

We’ve been invited back to London by the promoter at the Purple Turtle. She’s asked us to play The Archway in Highgate on 17th July; how could we refuse?!

Calling all Glaswegian bands!!

Wanna Gig???!!

Slab are playing the 13th Note Cafe, Glasgow on Friday 8th July and we need a local band to support or headline for the gig. We’re bringing all our own backline, so there’ll be two guitar cabs, one bass cab and a drum kit available. All you’ll need are amp heads and drum breakables. We’ll do our best to cover any fuel costs for you and hopefully there’ll be some door money to share!

Get in touch with us via our site or email us.

Cheers,

Jim, Jake and Andy.

May 2011

Fuckin’ May already!! Jesus!!

Thanks to Andreas for reviewing Megafaunal Genocide at Metal Music Reviews; what a great write-up!!

Well, we’ve been busy writing new material. Corpse Hunting Bear just needs Jake’s vocal gravel adding to it. We’re close to completing another which is turning into a heavy sprawler (no working title, yet).

The Punk Stag Weekend in Ashton under Lyne was absolutely awesome. A great venue and very professionally organised. Check out The Smears, all-girl punk/grunge at its best and Mangled – old skool punk with a dash of The Cramps. The place was rammed; Drongos and GBH put on a wicked show and everyone made us feel really welcome. We were dubious about playing to a punk crowd, but we went down a treat and got great feedback. A big thanks to 3CR’s Keith and a big “Oi” to Jason for getting the weekend well and truly sorted! Jake and myself are well proud of Kimbo, who after thirty years of smoking has stopped and if there was any time he was gonna crumble then the Punk Stag Weekend was gonna be it. Instead, he got royally sh*t-faced and slept in his car!

The gig at Scruffy’s on 11th May turned out to be a cracker. Mid-week gigs are always a risk, but Paul ‘Ram-Man’ did us proud. Dutch band Black Volvo were excellent, kind of a rockier Refused vibe going on and Waste of Organs punked-up the evening, big style. Thanks again to Mez for the stage sound.

Bauhaus T-shirt – a journey.

We’re all guilty of it. Those cherished toys/records/clothes just hanging around, giving you the hit of nostalgia when needed. Old T-shirts from gigs gone-by especially evoke the passage of ‘good times’.

I’ve still got my Cocteau Twins Heaven or Las Vegas tour shirt with ‘hot rock’ holes in abundance… naughty boy; my Cranes long-sleeve shirt with machine oil and printing ink splashed up the persil-white sleeves; a Young Gods long-sleeve tour shirt, famously sported by Mike Patton on a Faith No More publicity pic – though mine has a bleached out region thanks to an over-zealous washing machine; a Dinosaur Jr long-sleeved red number getting mustier by the decade. I love ‘em and will probably take them to the grave.

So, naturally, I feel great sympathy for this guy. My Bauhaus T-shirt of Pete Murphy’s glare died many years ago…

Alas... fond memories!

March/April 2011

We’re still reeling from the amazing Metal Hammer review and our UK tour calendar for July is getting ever busier.

The Appleby in Burton was a great gig. The venue’s amazing and the atmosphere very welcoming. (Reminded me and Kimbo of how the Walsall Wheatsheaf used to be. Full of character(s) and life.) Can’t wait to get back there!

We’ve nearly finished a new song ‘Corpse Hunting Bear’. It’s took us a while to get our heads around it and our ‘idiot board’ in the studio has great phrases like: Farmer Punk, Mecha, Weirdos and Punk 18s. All points of reference for when we inevitably get lost mid-song. Another song in the pipeline is developing into a real epic journey of riffage, but no working title.

The European tour has been put on hold due to financial restraints, yeh we’re f*ckin’ skint! But we may get to Greece in early autumn. We also have a charity bash lined-up at the Wagon & Horses, Digbeth, all in aid of the RSPCA. Look out for a Slab gig near you!!

And finally, congratulations to Kris & Rachel Godsize on the birth of their son Kaycee John Chambers on Thursday 7th July!! Hopefully following in his dad’s footsteps as an incredible frontman, wrestling compere and secret Kid Rock fan.
